U.S. Congressman Tim Walberg blacklisting constituents from his email list?

Just after Tim Walberg took office this year, I went to his official Congressional website and signed up to receive his constituent emails. I waited and waited and no emails came. Then, one day recently, a friend of mine forwarded his latest email to me with some comments.

I checked my email folder. No Walberg email.

I checked my spam folder. No Walberg email.

So, I went back to his site and signed up again, thinking that perhaps something had gone wrong and I hadn't actually signed up after all. Several minutes later I got an email back saying that I was already signed up and didn't need to sign up again.

"Well," I thought to myself. "That's odd. Because I know that he's sent emails out that I haven't received." So, I signed up again using a different email address, one that doesn't include my name.

Sure enough, two days later, I got a legislative update from my Congressman.

It appears that several years of negative blogging about Congressman Walberg and his policies has gotten me blacklisted from his email list.

Imagine that. How professional. Not.

GOP congressman claims military spending cuts needed, but won't identify a single one

I've got to give Fox's Neil Cavuto some credit on this one—he asked Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, a Michigan Republican and head of the GOP House Policy Conference, to get specific after McCotter claimed he supported military spending cuts. What ensued was a textbook example of political evasion:

Cavuto started out by asking McCotter to name a specific level of military spending cuts that he supports, citing Kentucky Senator Rand Paul's proposal to cut at least $60 billion from the defense budget. McCotter began his response by saying "I don't do figures," but he immediately proceeded to cite a very specific figure, claiming that House Republicans had already included a $14 billion military spending cut in their spending bill passed last month.

But McCotter's claim that the GOP cut $14 billion in military spending is not true: their spending bill actually increases military spending by 1.6% over FY2010 levels. McCotter's claim of $14 billion is relative to President Obama's spending request for FY11, but as far as dollars go, the GOP budget would spend more of them than last year.

Moreover, McCotter, along with a majority of Republicans, voted against cutting a $450 million military spending earmark for a jet fighter to be built in John Boehner's home district. So despite McCotter's claim to support military spending cuts, if he'd had his way, the House's proposed increase in military spending would be even bigger than it currently is.

McCotter was saving his best for last, though. When Cavuto asked him to say when Republicans will get serious about military spending cuts, McCotter's answer amounted to 'not now.' His rationale? We shouldn't be talking about spending cuts now because we need to "send a message to our enemy that we aren't screwing around." Perhaps not, but when it comes to actually dealing with the budget deficit, screwing around is pretty much the only thing House Republicans are doing.

Well, miracle of miracles... Sort of anyway...

It looks like Congressman Thaddeus McCotter (R-Livonia) might actually appear in public - right here in Michigan. The North Oakland Republican Club's latest newsletter claims that Thaddeus will grace their presence on the evening of March 24.

McCotter is part of the House GOP leadership team. I'm thinking that every Republican should be asked a form of the question, "What should shared sacrifice mean for people making more than $250,000/yr?"

BTW: Jim Bohannon is the ultimate center-right DC-insider CW tool. He's just awful. So when even "Jimbo" goes after the Republican, you've got to be thinking that we might be doing something right.

He also misled the listeners when he spoke of revenue growth under Reagan. Revenues grew more quickly in the eight years preceding Reagan, and the eight years after Reagan. Revenue growth nearly doubled the Reagan rate during the Clinton years.
